Thailand eVisa for Tongan Citizens

Thailand's new visa-exemption rules were published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026 and took effect on 15 September 2026. They ended the 60-day visa exemption introduced in July 2024: 60 countries and territories keep visa-free entry but only for 30 days, and 21 nationalities lost it entirely — including Tonga. The Thai authorities cited national security, overstays and the misuse of visa-free entry as the main reasons.

• Visa exemption: no longer available to Tongan citizens.
• Visa on arrival: now limited to citizens of Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia.
• Already in Thailand? Tongan citizens admitted on or before 14 September 2026 keep the stay they were granted at entry. Every entry from 15 September 2026 onward requires a visa.

• Visa type: Tourist eVisa, single entry.
• Length of stay: up to 60 days from the day you arrive.
• Validity: 3 months from issue — you must enter Thailand within that window.
• Extension: once, by up to 30 days, at a Thai immigration office — up to 90 days in total.
• Processing: 5 to 10 business days.
• Purpose: tourism, visiting friends or family, short wellness or medical stays. No paid work.
• Also required: the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), filed within 72 hours before arrival.

The application is completed online, but every detail must match your Tongan passport exactly. Have ready:

• A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages.
• A clear scan of your passport bio page.
• A recent passport-style photo (3.5 × 4.5 cm, white background, no glasses).
• A confirmed return or onward ticket leaving Thailand within 60 days of arrival.
• A hotel booking for at least your first nights, or an invitation letter from a host in Thailand.
• A bank statement for the last 3 months showing at least 20,000 THB (or the equivalent) per traveller.
• A valid email address to receive your eVisa.

1. Check your Tongan passport: at least 6 months of validity and 2 blank pages.
2. Start your Thailand eVisa application online and enter your personal and passport details exactly as printed in the passport.
3. Upload your passport scan, photo, flight ticket, hotel booking and bank statement.
4. Add your trip details: arrival date, port of entry and accommodation address in Thailand.
5. Submit and pay online, then follow the email updates while your application is processed.
6. Print your approved eVisa and keep it with your passport.
7. Within 72 hours before arrival, file your free TDAC — it is separate from the eVisa.

Standard processing is 5 to 10 business days, and it can take longer in peak season (December to February, the summer holidays and Songkran in April). Tongan citizens should apply at least 2 weeks before departure — and before paying for non-refundable flights or hotels. Because the eVisa is valid for 3 months from issue, applying too early can also be a problem: make sure your arrival date falls within that window.

There are no direct flights between Tonga and Thailand: from Nuku'alofa, travellers usually connect through Auckland, Sydney or Nadi and then another hub. Check the transit rules of your connecting country before you book: some countries, such as the United States and Canada, require a visa or an electronic authorisation even to change planes.

Your airline may check your eVisa at check-in: without a valid visa for Thailand, it can refuse to board you.

Thailand applies the rule to the passport you travel on, not to where you live. Tongan citizens living in New Zealand or Australia still need a visa for Thailand, even with a residence permit there. If you are a dual national and also hold a passport from one of the 60 visa-exempt countries, you can travel on that passport instead — enter and leave Thailand with the same passport.

On arrival at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Phuket (HKT), Chiang Mai (CNX) or a land border, present your passport, printed eVisa, TDAC QR code and return ticket. The officer checks your documents, takes your photo and fingerprints, and stamps your passport for a stay of up to 60 days. Officers can ask for proof of accommodation and funds, so keep them on your phone.

The eVisa is single-entry: if you leave Thailand for a side trip to Cambodia, Laos or Malaysia, you need a new visa to come back — or a re-entry permit obtained from Thai immigration before you leave. To stay longer than 60 days, request a 30-day extension at an immigration office before your stay expires.

• Passport valid less than 6 months after arrival — renew it before applying.
• Non-compliant photo — wrong size, background or resolution.
• Insufficient or irregular bank statement over the last 3 months.
• No return ticket, or a departure more than 60 days after arrival.
• Inconsistent details between the form and your documents (names, dates, addresses).
• A previous overstay in Thailand.

Since 15 September 2026, Tongan citizens can no longer use the visa exemption or visa on arrival. For tourism, family visits and short stays of up to 60 days, the Thailand eVisa is the right choice.
